This route covers the western half of the Nenggao Cross-Island Trail, Tianchi Cabin (Taiwan's finest high-mountain cabin), and two of the 100 Peaks: Mt. Qilai South Peak and Mt. Nanhua. The grade on this trail is not steep, and hikers are rewarded with bamboo meadows and views down to the Pacific Ocean at the top.
Blue Skies took up a small group on Jan. 24-25, 2021. These four hikers were all in great shape and made it look easy. We were lucky enough to have clear skies for the whole trip and a sea of clouds on both sides of the island greeting us on the first day. It doesn't get any better than this!
After camping at the cabin and enjoying a dinner and breakfast cooked by the staff, we headed out in the dark on the morning of Day 2 to catch the sunrise at Mt. Qilai South Peak. Then we came down and headed through the bamboo to Mt. Nanhua. The wind was so strong (and cold!) here that we didn't even bother with a group picture. We returned to the cabin for hot noodles and then began walking back to the trailhead.
We look forward to bringing more guests up next time on this gorgeous excursion into Taiwan's high mountains.
